Business Privilege License

Any individual, partnership or corporation operating a business or engaged in business activity within the corporate limits of Mooresville that sells a product is subject to the business (privilege) license requirements set forth in Chapter 6 of the Mooresville Code of Ordinances. The Code of Ordinance is available online or at Town Hall, 413 North Main Street.

A business (privilege) license must be obtained no later than the first day of your business operation. Before the Town can issue a Beer/Wine license, the applicant must present a State-issued license.
With the exception of licenses for retailers of beer and wine, business (privilege) licenses may be pro-rated after December 31. Effective July 1, 2008, business licenses are issued for a 12-month period beginning May 1 and expire April 30 of each calendar year.

The annual license fee depends upon the types of business being conducted. Fees begin at a flat rate of $2.50 to a maximum of $300 per year, per business classification. A business may incur more than one fee per location causing a fee per location to be more than $300 per year.

Why does the Town require businesses to have a Business (Privilege) License?
Authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly and the Town Board of Commissioners, this requirement provides reliable information as to:

• who is conducting/planning to conduct business within the Town limits;
• what kind of business is being conducted within Town limits; and
• where the business is being conducted within Town limits.

This information ensures that businesses locate/operate in areas that are properly zoned for the particular type of business being conducted. It also ensures that businesses whose activities place special and concentrated demands on infrastructure and basic Town services will share equitably in the cost of maintaining that infrastructure and those basic services.
